Apple or Windows? Music Meltdown

Apple or Windows? The eternal question.

When it comes to home computer technology – hell just technology in general – it’s one of the most common questions asked. And it leaves people polarised.

I’m going to put this out there: I have never owned an iPhone. It’s been Android all the way for me. Samsung. Love em. Similarly, I have predominately used Windows only.. I had a MacBook Air once but that’s a story for another blog.

I am writing this on a 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro that I bought last night – thank you Facebook market place – and I have to say I am pretty impressed. It’s a cool piece of technology.

This blog I’m mixing it up a bit and asking what you prefer to use and also my experiences around both Windows and Mac.

Enjoy!

Apple

Cool story bro

So as many of you know I quit my corporate role recently and have committed to an Associate Degree in Music at AMPA. It really is a cool story and I feel empowered and grateful to have made such a huge choice to commit to my music. I just finished my 1st week and it was awesome. Definitely a highlight was having a singing lesson.. Super uncomfortable.

We had this performance class yesterday and as far as I can tell a huge component of the unit is watching students perform their pieces and then critiquing them. Yesterday we just watched minus the critique for the 1st week. I wasn’t sure what to expect in this class as it was a performance class so I had a USB loaded with backing tracks. Anyway one of the head teachers asked if anyone wanted to get up and perform and I jumped at the opportunity. I did Flow like Water and the crowd lost their shit. It was dope.

I also did Bound by War and when I’d finished some of the teachers were joking around about how I could put up a merch table in the corridor near the library. Little do they know they’ve planted a seed and I aim to get everyone in some Prim merch by the end of the trimester.

But Prim, it doesn't compute

Like I said: I’ve always used Windows OS and am quite comfortable using the system. So much so, in fact, that I bought myself a gaming PC at the end of the financial year in June this year. I don’t know why I bought a gaming PC to blog and do music shit and not play games at all, but hey: I love a good sale.

When I went for my audition at AMPA with the dean, he told me that they teach only on MAC. The program they use to make beats and produce music is called Logic. Which is exclusive to Apple.

The irony.

I had my 1st music production class yesterday and decided then and there I needed an Apple. I’ve also decided I need the Native Instruments Mikr0 mk 3.. just so you know.

So I went shopping yesterday online. I was calling my music production teacher every time I found a laptop through Gumtree or eBay and asking him if it was up to scratch. Thanks for taking my calls bro.

Windows

So this is what I bought last night:

2015 MacBook Pr0

15 inch screen

16GB Ram

500 and something gig memory

For $1100 cash

I am stoked with the price and so far – touch wood – everything seems to be going smoothly. I like the laptop. Maybe even more than my beast gaming PC. I like the 2 finger scrolling and the speed that it runs. It’s very quick.

Nearly all of the people I know in the Sydney music scene use Macs to make music and some even go on to say that it’s the only thing to use when making music. I know people that prefer Windows for the office/business side of stuff and prefer Mac for music and more personal usage. I guess it just comes down to the individual right?

get with the program

I guess in summary both Windows and Mac have their pros and cons. I’m glad I’m in the position to experience what both have to offer. My production teacher was saying he had students who had Windows and he would teach them on Logic and then they would go home and change the files to run in Windows and then change it back and bring it into class.. I have never used any music programming software so I’m starting from the ground up and that sounds like a headache. He was saying the students advised it was tedious and ended up buying Macs eventually.

So I’m not ready to convert to Apple fully yet as I do love my Samsung Galaxy phone and we have a Samsung Smart TV.. and a washing machine come to think of it. What are your thoughts on Apple vs Windows? What do you prefer and what do you use it for?

Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.

As always thanks for rocking with ya boi Prim!

Unit next time, peace fam!

  1. I use Apple at home and PCs at work. But in past times, I ran Cubase on a PC in the studio. To be blunt, it was glitchy as fuck and I lost a bunch of tracks because of this.

When I went to Macs at home, it was the best thing! Macs rule for creativity. Both their sound and visual processing is dope as. Just you wait. You’ll be agreeing with me soo enough haha

    1. Hahaha it seems that Mac is here for the win when it comes to making music. The uni only uses Mac so maybe it’s all a blessing in disguise. If not, I still have 2 sick computers haha
