What up fam, it’s your boy Primitive back with another blog with a special write up for the homie Boo Lawson, who has recently released his 2nd album, How to Catch Lightning in a Bottle.
Boo Lawson’s 2nd album How to Catch Lighting in a Bottle explores a massive range of themes from mental health, depression, alcohol abuse, systemic inequality, capitalism, and war.
The album is a bare-bones, honest, vulnerable look into the mind of a tormented creative, trying to find meaning in a world that often feels disconnected and brutal. A painfully honest body of work that blends hip hop/trip hop with elements of rock and edm to give us How to Catch Lightning in a Bottle.
A soul searching, beautiful piece of music, big ups Boo Lawson.
Boo Lawson: A storm of words
Thanks for your time bro! Well done on the release. Lets get into it.
Where did the album title come from?
On one level, I wanted to say something about how unpredictable making music reeeally is. To note that we so inclined to create are harnessing something intensely real and exciting when we pull all this crazy shit together. Its a sort of celebration of that tradition. Aaaaand on a darker note it’s a nod to fears and anxieties – a damaged side of myself I’ve grappled with for years. Plenty of bottle too.
What does this album mean to you?
The album for me is a sorta reckoning about the various states I find myself in. It’s sometimes very personal what I attempt to share here. However, it’s also a chronicle of the weirdness. It’s a bag of that strangeness which lots of people have dragged about their lives – let’s say – before the pandemic to whatever we call now. I guess we call it now. The world is throwing up all sorts of interesting shit. It works as a time-capsule-meets-nostalgia-trip-but-its-also-a-blues-session sorta deal (To put it simply haha). Whatever folks get out of this album will help determine what it really means to me in the long run. I know what its been for me.
What inspired some of these songs?
Some of the songs on this baby are thoughtful reflections on how severely screwed up the world can be, but others are about impulses, tapping into how we feel about what we’re all doing.
I love the way the album ends. Just kind of leaves the listener hanging. Was that intentional?
Im glad I finished the record with “Trying”. It’s a song I’ve had in the works in various forms for about 10 years now. It’s sorta left me hanging too, yet through thick and thin it’s always whispered it’s way back to me. Maybe it’s the tune or the hook or how it all combines on the right day when you hear it. Anyway, I like how solemn it left everything.
Did you achieve what you wanted to with this release?
I don’t know if I set out to achieve anything more than to release this creature into the wild, but each moment that passes I grow more confident it was the right thing to share with you all.
How long have you been working on this album?
I’ve been making this album give or take 4-5 years? Had to cut the umbilical cord and let it go.
What’s next for Boo Lawson?
The next thing is to get a tad more grounded. I’ve already got a load of writing in the bank but I want to work more live instrumentation into my performances. Bands and live music is where I come from, so I hope to get back to incorporating that into my live sets and general music-making. Keep a look out. I’ll be back with more of something a lot quicker than even I think.
That’s the line anyway. Peace x
Big ups to Boo Lawson for taking the time to answer so honestly. If you haven’t heard the album yet, you can stream it on all major streaming platforms. You can support Boo directly through his Bandcamp. I’ll leave the links to Boo’s work beneath. Peace fam!
As always, thanks for rocking with ya boy Prim!
