Johniepee – Confessions

  • by

My special guest feature today is with the one and only Johniepee. Johniepee is a lyrical technician with strong, rhythmical roots in boom bap. I have had the pleasure of playing on the same bill as JP on a number of occasions and I’ve gotta say the guy is an absolute legend. One of the nicest guys you will ever meet, Johniepee is also a lyrical monster and crusher of mics. Big ups my bro.

I would describe Johniepee’s style as laid back boom bap with smooth lyrical prowess. The type of stuff you can have on in the background when entertaining guests or cranked right up when it’s time to get loose.

One of the nicest guys in Aussie Hip Hop, I had the pleasure of speaking with him recently about his journey through music. Enjoy!

Johniepee

Thanks for coming on bro! How long have you been making music?

I mucked around as a kid on this programme called “Super Dooper Music Looper” which was epic, I was a real Dr Dre protégé haha.

I’m a drummer and play guitar too but pursuing rap for me really started in 2015.

Dope. What’s your ideal creative environment?

Somewhere with a view of nature, somewhere that gives me the feeling that I’m apart of something bigger.

What inspires you?

Life. The ups and downs provide everything you need. You just have to take the time to allow yourself to look at the world through your creative lens. The more you do this, the more you’ll create.

Did you grow up with music in your home?

I certainly did. My mum was always playing bands like the commodores, earth wind and fire, the doobie brothers, little river band, genesis, Phil Collins and heaps more.

My whole family is pretty musical so family jams were always on the cards.

Who are you listening to these days?

Currently, a lot of: Mick Jenkins, Saba, Isaiah Rashad, J.Cole, JID, Bas, Earthgang, 6lack.

Loving the new J.Cole album. What does music give you?

Motivation, inspiration, resilience, hope.

What do you write about?

Anything and everything. But usually all based on something I’ve gone through, positive, negative, relationship stuff, money dramas, issues with people, hating a boss, loving life, hating life.

There’s so much to be inspired by. Most of the best songs in the world come from a super simple concept.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently going through the final edits and mixing process of my second album which is due for release later in the year. I’m also planning a national tour to follow, covid willing. Heaps coming!

Awesome. Funniest moments in music?

There was a song I did with Joey Maker called “Bed Hair” and Delipres the producer thought it would be funny to change the words “Bed hair” with “BEARS!”

So the bridge ended up sounded like this whilst in the studio:

“When we’re out, all I’m thinking bout is BEARS
Your parents house, all I’m thinking bout is BEARS
So let it out, let me whip you up some BEARS
Without a doubt you’re waking next to me with BEARS!”

Big ups Johniepee for taking the time to share some insight into your life and journey through music. Johnie is one of those dudes you meet and automatically like. Every time I see him he is positive and  smiling, The fact that he spits dope fire bars is just a bonus. Can’t wait to hear the new material!

You can find Johniepee on all major streaming platforms and of course YouTube.

As always thanks for rocking with ya boi Prim!

Until next time, peace fam!
