What up fam! It’s ya boi Primitive and I have returned. This is the 1st blog I’ve written in just over 18 months. Time flies, life fluctuates and priorities constantly change, right? Right!
So much has happened since the last blog. It’s hard to know where to start; this is some cathartic release about life as an indie hip hop artist, (shoutout Rah! Records) marriage and being a small business owner. Enjoy!
We out here fam
Rah! Records, the grass-roots Aussie hip hop label, hit the road over the weekend and went up north to Port Macquarie. The show hit this dope little joint Bar Carpone on Saturday night. The bill featured local cats to Sydney vets, and was part of an East-coast tour to celebrate the launch of the debut albums of supergroup Beyond Dope as well as Matt Xander.
Big love to BC – who’s originally from Port – for bringing hip hop back to his hometown, 20 years later. What a legend. Dude also hosted the night. Full circle stuff. Fucking love you bro.
Special mention to international guest all the way from Canada Mickey O’brien. Big shoutout to Boomtown Ruins (BC and Ham) and of course, ya boi Prim.
I went on for an early set at the 7.30 spot. It’s always interesting going on early as people are still settling into the night, and sometimes I don’t get the response from the crowd that I’d like. Not that I can control that.. but yeah. I did what I do, gave it my best and had the standard closer of STFU. I was pretty good lol.
After the set, I was eating at a table at the back, and this dude comes up to me and goes:
“Hey bro, that was sick! How long have you been performing?”
“About 10 years” I replied.
There was a pause and the guy literally said: “Ohh well. Keep going then.” and got up and left.
Shoutout to the fans.
rah!
It’s the concept of travelling to perform original music.. what a gift.. It was a really special night. Shoutout to my wife for making the trip. On the drive back to Sydney, we stopped in at a mates place. We were talking about music and the journey and our friend goes:
“Do you make any money from it?”
I proceeded to bang on about the industry for a while, being an indie artist playing original music in a niche genre, and then a recent memory came to me:
I was trimming a clients hedge – very nicely, may I add – listening to the new album I’m working on and it kinda hit me that I was working in my business Prims Trims, making money to fund my music whilst listening to my music.. fucking cool.
It’s easy for me to get tied up in the intangible things that don’t really matter.. especially with music and a perceived level of status or success. I am my own worst enemy though.
So in short, the answer is no.. no, I don’t make money from it.
Digging in the War chest
Life gets busy.. and it takes effort. I’m learning I only have a certain amount of energy and I have to be wary of how I choose to use that energy, and who I choose to use it with. I have to allow myself to be human. We all have limits.
The new Primitive album titled War Chest is nearing completion. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. Looking like a New Years album at this stage. Big love fam.
You’re dope as fuck. Blog more.
